DISTANCE OF
PLANTING
|
|
Distance of planting is very critical
for fruit trees that are not responsive to pruning (like
carabao mango). Many though that the 5 x 5 meters
distance of mango planting in Thailand could also be
applicable for Carabao mango. As a result, many
nurseries recommended a 5 x 5 meters distance in order
to increase sales. But before a Carabao mango bears
fruit which usually takes place after 5 to 6 years, the
crown are already overlapping each other, making the
trees unproductive. The owner will then be forced to cut
in-between trees to make the planting distance at 10 x
10 meters.
|
|
A closer distance is only
applicable to imported mangoes like chokanan thai mango
because they start bearing fruits at an early stage.
Prolific mangoes grow slowly since the growth hormone is
concentrated in the fruits. Besides, imported varieties
of mango respond to pruning.
There are fruit trees that can be planted close to one
another. Rambutan can be a nurse tree for lanzones,
mangosteen and durian.
