CONVERTING RICE FIELD INTO ORCHARD FARM

You can increase your income from your rice field by converting in into an orchard. Ricefield, especially rainfed areas can be converted into a mango or fruit orchard without disrupting the planting of palay during the first 6 years from date of planting the tree. The fruit trees should be planted in mound 2-3 feet high with 5 to 6 feet base. This will prevent waterlogged condition on the root system especially during rainy season.

How to grow fruit trees on low-lying field
Agriculture Magazine, February 2003

San Antonio, Nueva Ecija, Cris Empaynado mixed clay soil with 1/3 rice hull to make the mound porous and planted double rootstock Guimaras Carabao mango, after a few months, the area was submerged in water for several days because of typhoon. The double rootstock mango overcome the adverse weather condition that no mortality has been observed.
In San Marcelino, Zambales a ten-hectare ricefield was converted into a Guimaras mango plantation two years ago. A 2-feet high mound of sandy loam soil was made in every ten meters where the double rootstock mangoes were planted. Today, the double rootstock mangoes are already 5-6 feet high with well-developed crown. The trees are also starting to bear fruits voluntarily. In a nearby ricefield, all mango tree planted without mound died.
