TALES
OF A LATEXLESS JACKFRUIT.
The picture at left shows the seedling of a
latexless jackfruit from Malaysia which was
planted by Bernie Dizon in December 1998. It
was just over two years old in January 2001,
when it started to bear fruit and a total of
10 fruit were harvested late May and June
2001. By late November this year it is in
fruit again, barely six months after its
first 10 fruits were harvested. In right
photo, Bernie Dizon is inspecting the 11
fruits that have been formed so far during
this second fruiting. This months, the
jackfruit tree is exactly three years old
from planting. The fruits are of medium size
but very fleshy. The flesh is orange, sweet
and crisp. |

LATEXLESS JACKFRUIT.
This is a five-year-old latexless jackfruit
tree that has borne fruit for two times now.
Originally grown from seed, it first bore
fruit when it was three-years-old. The fruit
is very fleshy, bright orange and of
superior eating quality.
Bernie Dizon is now
propagating it asexually on
double rootstock
to produce faster-growing trees. Its being
latex-free is a big advantage because the
fruit is very convenient to process. |
