DA - EVIARC Sweet: New NSIC Registered Jackfruit Variety

We take pride in the recognition being heaped on Region 8 as the jackfruit capital of the Philippines because of the outstanding jackfruit variety developed by EVIARC,” DA-8’s Regional Executive Director Leo P. Cańeda proudly announced.

The new variety developed by the DA-EVIARC is named “EVIARC Sweet.”

EVIARC Sweet had been evaluated for 3 fruiting years starting in 2004 until 2006, using the standards set by the Fruit Crops Technical Working Group of the National Seed Industry Council. It is aromatic, ellipsoid in shape and contains moderate latex. The color of the aril or fruitlet is golden yellow and sweet with a total soluble solids or TSS of 25.140 Brix. The average edible portion is 42.58%. The tree is about 7 meters tall with spreading branches and produces an average of 35 fruits per cropping season. The trees are grown at RIARC Satellite. in Balinsasayao, Abuyog, Leyte. NSIC recommends the variety for “processing” but can likewise be eaten fresh.

Grafted planting materials of the new variety are available in the Department of Agriculture particularly in its 3 research facilities namely: RIARC-in Balinsasayao, Abuyog, Leyte, Main RIARC in Bagong Silang, Babatngon, Leyte and, at RIARC - in Anquina, San Jorge, Samar. In addition, scion groves were established in the different Provincial Technical Institute of Agriculture, the Provincial Research and Extension Centers (PREC) and the Department of Land Reform to improve access and utilization of quality plant materials of EVIARC Sweet. EVIARC Sweet is a major variety planted in over 200 hectares of jackfruit plantations in the cities of Calbayog, Ormoc and in the different municipalities of the region which were recipients of the ‘Plant Now, Pay Later’ Program of the Department of Agriculture-GMA-High Value Commercial Crops Program.

Since EVIARC Sweet has been grown for over 18 years in the region, it has been found to perform well. Jackfruit growers in the region are assured of the availability of the top genetic material. The variety can even be adopted in other parts of the country. It is therefore recommended that prospective growers should get their planting materials from accredited nursery operators or from any of the abovementioned participating institutions.

The Opening Program of the recently conducted Regional Development and Extension (R D & E) Symposium at Visayas State University, Baybay, Leyte also held the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement on Jackfruit Village Establishment and oathtaking of the officers of the Baybay Jackfruit Growers Association. Jackfruit is dubbed as Eastern Visayas’ sunrise industry because of the trailblazing rsearches and the resulting food products it now popularized and sold as food delicacies in the region. Recently, DA-8, through the Eastern Visayas Integrated Agricultural Research Center (EVRIARC) has registered “EVIARC Sweet” as a new jackfruit variety with the National Seed Industry Council this year.
