Fruit
production by multiple rootstock and nor importation is the
answer to the country's fruit industry, this is the
contention of Bernardo O. Dizon, one of the country's
outstanding pomologist - viticulturists.
Dizon has found out from years of research and observation
at the UP BLISS Economic Garden in Diliman, Quezon City,
that double or multiple rootstock proved more superior than
single rootstock plants.
He pointed out that what more root systems, any
non-traditional fruit trees like durian, lychee, rambutan,
Satsuma orange (ponkan seedless), Davao pink pomelo,
Thailand sungsong pomelo and other imported fruit can be
grown successfully in commercial quantity in the country.
Proving greater anchorage in the ground that can
withstand strong winds, typhoons and drought, multiple
rootstocks plants are excellent aid in high-tech
reforestation of denuded mountains and drought-stricken
areas, Dizon said. They are also a source of fruits for
additional income and serve as efficient system of
controlling drought and soil erosion.
Dizon also discovered that providing multiple
rootstocks overcome biennial or alternate fruit-bearing
habits of fruit trees. Thus, continuous fruiting is enhanced
in multiple rootstocks plants that shall stabilize supply
and price.
