PANIYUR BLACK
PEPPER |
|
Manila
Bulletin, Agriculture, Sat., Dec. 2, 2000 |
Indian Black Pepper has long fruit spikes. |
 |
|
The Paniyur variety of black pepper from
Kerala, India, is proving to be highly
productive here. A grower in Isabela reports
that the yield is more than double that of
the ordinary variety. The spikes are six to
eight inches long while the native is not
even half that long. The price of black
pepper in Isabela is a high P400 per kilo.
The beauty about black pepper is that the
harvest can be stored indefinitely while
waiting for more favorable prices. This
seedling in photo can start fruiting in just
one and a half years if taken care of
properly. It can also be grown in the home
garden. |

Rooted
planting of Paniyur, a black pepper variety with long fruit
spikes (double that of the ordinary black pepper variety),
will be among the special offerings at the open house.
This is an introduced variety from Kerala, India. It can be
grown in the home garden as well as in commercial farms.
At the open house, Bernie Dizon will demonstrate the proper
planting of grafted high-value fruit trees such as
Duku,
longkong (a first class variety of lanzones from Thailand),
durian,
rambutan,
mangosteen,
lychee,
Millennium mango,
variegated chico,
longan and others.
Dizon will also show how he topworked some undesirable
mango trees using as scion budsticks of Millennium mango. He
is also in the process of making a "multinational mango
tree" by grafting unto one tree several varieties, including
ten from Thailand, and one each from Taiwan, Malaysia,
Florida and Africa. |
