DURIAN IN SILANG.
Photo shows a
double-stock durian tree that is full of flowers at
the Cavite State University (CvSU) planted by CvSU
President Ruperto S. Sangalang four years ago. Like
other plantings in Luzon, durian appears to bear
fruit here in February to March compared to the
usual May and June flowering in Mindanao. The fruits
in Luzon are expected to be harvestable late May or
June. The tree in photo is now in its second year of
bearing. It was supplied by
Bernie Dizon who also
supplied other high-value trees such as grafted mangosteen, lychee and rambutan. Photo shows from
left: Bernie Dizon, Prof. Pedro F. Matel (in charge
of the fruit project), and lawyer Ernie Perez. Other
places in Luzon where durian trees are fruiting
include Central Luzon State University in Nueva
Ecija, Tiaong, Quezon; Alaminos, Laguna; Lipa City
in Batangas, and many others. |
