Orchard farmers should not worry about GATT and
imported fruits competition. This is the advice
of Bernardo O. Dizon,
one of the outstanding pomologist of the country and
operator of Dizon-Protected Areas & Wildlife Bureau (PAWB) -
Department of Environment & Natural Resources (DENR) demo
farm at the Ninoy Aquino Park in Quezon City. The project
promotes planting high-value fruits (durian, rambutan,
lychee, lanzones, mangosteen, mango) and forest tree
showcasing cloning and multiple rootstock technology in
answer to farmers' GATT problem. Dizon said what the farmers
need is to plant high-value fruit trees with multiple
rootstock instead of local fruits, with no economic value.
Durian, mango, lychee, lanzones, mangosteen, pomelo,
rambutan with multi-root system are now successfully
growing, drought, pest and disease resistant, with shorter
gestation period, prolific, yield 300 percent more, produce
off season fruits and can be planted in any type of soil and
climate. In Quezon City, Engr. T.L. Umali's tiple rootstock
rambutan and durian produce fruit 2-3 times a year. Cloning
and multi-root system of high-value fruit trees in being
promoted by the government thru the Technology and
Livelihood Resources Center (TLRC). Seminars and field trips
will be held every last Sunday of the month starting March
26. |
