Growing highly price imported fruits are no longer a
monopoly of Davao growers or those from temperate countries.
Also anyone need not travel to Davao and other far provinces
or abroad just to see fruit bearing oranges (sunkist), Davao
(Chinese), pomelo, King mandarin, grapefruit, grapes and
other fruit trees. Right at the entrance to the University
of the Philippines, the UP BLISS Ecology Garden, a fruit
research and demonstration project of the UP BLISS Community
Association in support of the government food production
program has grown successfully these imported fruit-bearing
trees.
Mother
plants of seedless oranges, grapes and other imported
fruits, were brought by Alex Reyes Jr of Aristocrat
Restaurants from the US and other countries. Seeded orange
came from Leonardo Perante of Bay., N. Viscaya, while
seedlings grapes were brought by Desiderato Aquino from
Bisalia, California. Other plants were brought into the
country by balikbayans.
Prompted by this successful growing of imported fruit
trees under local conditions and in order to help orchard
growers, Bernardo Dizon,
multi-awarded agriculturist who manages the project will
give free lectures and technical information every Sunday on
different aspects of growing citrus, grapes and in orchard
management especially on plant nutrition and pest or disease
control.
Dizon is backed up by academic and many years of
experience in farm management, plant research and
propagation. He was recipient of Don Andres Soriano Memorial
research scholarship at Central Luzon State University, a
University Award and other citations from civic
organizations as one of the most outstanding agriculturist
in the country for modifying imported fruit production
technique. |
