WATERLOGGED ADOBE SOIL
TRANSFORMED INTO FRUIT BOTANIC GARDEN.
The photo at left shows the grass and sickly
trees growing in a portion of the
Ninoy Aquino
Parks and Wildlife along North Avenue, Quezon
City, in 1992 when the site was awarded to
Bernie Dizon so he could transform it into some
kind of fruit botanic garden. Before Dizon's
take over, the area was planted yearly with
forest trees but they did not survive the
waterlogged conditions of the area. There is
very thin heavy-clay top soil. Today, the place
is full of exotic fruit trees, including durian,
rambutan, lychee, mango, lanzones, apple makopa,
rimas, marang and others. The durian trees have
been fruiting during the last four years and are
again starting to bear flowers. Photo shows Gary
Dizon before one of the fruiting durian trees
last year. This Wednesday, January 24, Bernie
Dizon will conduct an open house at the place to
show what he did to transform the place. There
will be lectures on planting propagation and
grafted planting materials of
durian,
rambutan,
mangosteen,
variegated chico,
longkong, duku
lanzones, lychee,
grafted Millennium and Guimaras mango will be available |
